Langyao red is a high-temperature copper-red glazed porcelain created during the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty under the supervision of the imperial kiln supervisor Lang Tingji. It was fired in a reducing flame at temperatures above 1300 degrees Celsius. Its core characteristics include a deep, vibrant scarlet glaze resembling freshly congealed ox blood; a strong glassy texture and fine crackles resembling ox hair; a white "lampwick edge" (loose rim) formed by glaze dripping down the rim; and a rich, vibrant glaze dripping down the base, controlled by a turning process to prevent it from flowing to the bottom (Langyao's "drip-foot" technique). These features make it a pinnacle of ancient Chinese ceramic art.
